About Me

Even from my earliest years, I liked to feed people and share my food with others. I have been privileged enough to grow up in Hong Kong, live in Malaysia, Australia, Canada, and now the United States; and I have travelled extensively throughout the world, sampling the delicacies of many different cultures. Much of what I have sampled and enjoyed, I have also re-created in my own kitchen.

From enjoying rich chocolate mousse on the Champs Elysees in Paris...

To hawker (street food) in Singapore...

Eating an ice cream the shape of the Sydney Opera House in Sydney (Australia)...

Or choosing the perfect fresh lobster for our table at the restaurants on Lamma Island in Hong Kong...

Good food has always played a huge part in my life...

And now my husbands, life...

I come from a long line of "eaters" and "cooks". Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers were fabulous cooks, as was my maternal Great-Grandmother. My mother and my sister are both amazing in the kitchen, as was my Aunty and my father; they have all passed their talent, knowledge, recipes, and tips on to me, and now I am finally relinquishing hold and passing it on to you, my dear reader.

My sister, Hetty is a great cook and taught me how to make scrambled eggs when I was six. She really is responsible for starting me cooking

Mum creating something yummy in the kitchen. I often sat in a small chair next to her as she cooked, and so learned by her example of putting a little of this and a little of that and creating an extraordinary dish

My Maternal Grandmother "Oma" was a great cook and created some amazing dishes which I still make today

My Maternal Great-Grandmother (photoed here with my Mum) created a tradition of German cooking which I still carry on today

The cooking was not only left up to the ladies of the family; my Great-Grandfather also made some wonderful meals, and one is his potato salad which all of us women continue to make at times of celebration today

My Aunty Gilnur on my Dad's side was also a wonderful cook and learned very well from my Grandmother

My Paternal Grandmother ran a boarding house in China in the 1920s-40s and here she created some amazing dishes for their guests. Many of her recipes she not only passed to my Aunty Gilnur, but also to my Dad who is also a good cook and who taught my Mother, my sister, and me many of the cherished family recipes

Many of my recipes and tastes come from my Dad, who not only taught me, but my Mum and sister the time-honoured recipes that my Grandmother, his mother, passed down and taught him. In his life, he made many great meals, and taught me that "disasters" are just lessons to teach one how not to do something. He taught me to never "cry" over spilled milk, but find a way to "sop" it up, and create something amazing with it. He was my best friend and a truly amazing cook.

Let me tell you that giving up many of my recipes has been quite some time coming as I believe in holding on tight and keeping them in the family. But I also believe that in my passing on these tried and true recipes, the gift of taste and the heritage of my family is being passed on.

All the recipes which I share here are original (self-created or passed down) unless otherwise stated.

I encourage you, my reader, to please try out many of these recipes and enjoy them. I would love to hear from you, so please do leave me a comment. I am proud to know that my heritage is being passed on, not only within my own family, but now also to you.

Happy Cooking, Happy Eating!
